On the headland that cradles the town, the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Mount in Camariñas rises with an 18th-century Baroque outline —a plain façade and a single bell gable— framing a natural lookout over the estuary, Muxía, Camariñas and the open ocean. Here the wind carries salt… and the ring of a bell.
For the people of Camariñas it is a house of solace: before putting to sea, many fishers entrust themselves to the Virgin of the Mount. The great feast comes on Pentecost Monday, with Masses from the early morning and the pilgrimage that was once Camariñas’ most important: whole families spent the day on Monte Farelo, sharing meals after the services—a tradition now being revived.
Devotion is tangible at the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Mount in Camariñas: ship ex-votos, lit candles and, just below the façade, the rock where tradition marks the Virgin’s “footprints”. Access: from Camariñas, follow the road towards Cape and Vilán Lighthouse; after 1.2 km turn left, signposted to the football field and the “Virxe do Monte” hermitage.
