Walking among burial mounds

Walking through a meadow, we see in a tree plantation the imposing silhouette of an earth mound 20 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters high that houses the Arca do Rabós. The “mámoa” is partially destroyed on the north side, just on the border with the neighboring plot, but this damage made it possible to verify the existence of a stone armor that originally covered it.

In the centre of the tumulus, a depression caused by treasure hunters reveals the remains of a dolmen with a polygonal chamber and a corridor facing southeast. The dolmen is quite altered but retains at least three slabs of the corridor, two of the chamber and the partially broken cover cover. In the break of the lid there are wedge marks, which tell us of the existence of old stonework for the extraction of stone. Some authors also point to the possibility of the existence of engravings on one of the slabs of the corridor.

The monument is not alone, as it is part of a huge group of burial mounds, the necropolis of Chan do Cabral, which together with that of the A Fervenza Reservoir make this area one of the places with the highest concentration of burial mounds in Costa da Morte. Without going any further, you can see another “mámoa” just across the road in front of the Arca do Rabós estate.
