Flavours of the Atlantic: the gastronomy of Costa da Morte

The Costa da Morte is a destination that captivates with its wild landscapes, its imposing lighthouses and its gastronomy
Percebes frescos

The Costa da Morte is a destination that captivates with its wild landscapes, its imposing lighthouses and its rough sea. But there is something else that makes this place unique: its gastronomy, 365 days a year. Here, the Atlantic dictates the menu and seafood is the main protagonist.

If you are a lover of good food, on the Costa da Morte you will find authentic cuisine, based on the freshness of the ingredients and on recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Today we take you on a gastronomic route through this land of fishermen and shellfish gatherers.

Seafood and fish: the soul of Atlantic cuisine

To speak of the Costa da Morte is to speak of seafood, especially in the months with R. Its cold, nutrient-rich waters mean that barnacles, spider crabs and crab, among many others, are of exceptional quality. In places like Corme, barnacle gatherers brave the waves to collect these unique delicacies, which can then be tasted in local restaurants.

Fish also play a fundamental role in the gastronomy of the area. Sea bass and turbot are the stars of various delicious traditional recipes.

📍 Where to try it?

  • Muxía and Camariñas are perfect destinations for fresh seafood.
  • In Laxe and Malpica, you will find restaurants with freshly caught fish.
  • In fact, in any of the 17 towns of the Costa da Morte you can visit restaurants that serve fresh, top-quality raw materials.

Traditional dishes with a taste of home

In addition to seafood and fish, the Costa da Morte prepares dishes that are deeply rooted in tradition. One of them is the famous “caldo galego”, a comforting stew made with turnip greens, potatoes and different types of meat.

Another must is the “empanada gallega”, which in this area is filled with ingredients such as xoubas (sardines), cockles or octopus. Every bakery and every house has its own secret recipe, so don’t hesitate to try different versions. Carballo’s empanada and bread are very famous within the territory, so it would be a great idea to visit its bakeries.

Desserts that taste like tradition

To put the finishing touch to any meal on the Costa da Morte, you have to leave room for dessert.

As good Galicians, in Costa da Morte we are great lovers of traditional desserts. Every time of the year has its own, but Carnival is a very sweet time to try filloas or orellas

Wines and spirits to toast

To accompany the flavours of the Atlantic, there is nothing better than a good Galician wine. The whites from the Rías Baixas D.O., especially the Albariños, are perfect for pairing with our unbeatable seafood and fish.

Traditional liqueurs such as coffee liqueur, herb liqueur or crema de orujo, a fundamental part of any after-dinner drink in Galicia, are also well known.

Conclusion: a destination for the palate

The gastronomy of the Costa da Morte is a combination of tradition, freshness and passion for local produce. From freshly caught seafood to stews with a taste of home, each dish tells a story of this unique land.Would you like to organise a gastronomic route along the Costa da Morte?
